This fund was established as a bequest in the will of Mrs. Ernestine Flanley Sweeney. Mrs. Sweeney wanted to honor the memory of the Flanley’s, once a prominent Wakefield family. Mrs. Sweeney was a lifelong Wakefield resident, and her father, John L. Flanley, was also a native Wakefieldian with extensive real estate holdings in Wakefield. He served on the Board of Selectmen and operated a furniture store in town. Mrs. Sweeney was a member of the Kosmos Club and Our Lady of Nazareth Guild. In early years she was a member of the Philomathia Club and the Spanish Club of Boston.
