The Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield, Inc. (TSF) is honored to announce the establishment of the Benjamin J. Tan Scholarship for the Performing Arts. Beginning in June 2026, a scholarship will be awarded from this fund to a local student pursuing education beyond high school.
Ben, a gifted musician, dedicated educator, and deeply compassionate individual whose life was defined by music, community, and connection, passed away at the age of 36 following a battle with colorectal cancer. Ben wished to establish this fund. His parents – Ann and Ramon, his sister – Liz, and loved ones created this fund to honor his life, legacy, and passion for music and education.
Ben’s love for music began early in life. His musical journey was profoundly inspired and shaped by his piano teacher, Mr. James Rizza of Wakefield, whose patience, kindness, and mentorship left a lasting impact. Ben studied classical piano with Mr. Rizza from 2004 to 2008, developing both technical skill and a deep appreciation for teaching music as a discipline. Mr. Rizza remained an important figure in Ben’s life until his passing in October 2025.
A 2008 graduate of Wakefield Memorial High School, Ben was an active member of the Jazz Ensemble and built lifelong friendships through music. He continued his education at Emerson College, earning a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism in 2012, where he also served as a radio music show DJ and news director while remaining involved in the performing arts. He later pursued his passion for music education, earning a Master’s degree from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music in 2018.
Throughout his life, Ben was a prolific and passionate musician. He performed widely across Massachusetts as a pianist, guitarist, and keyboardist. His musical projects included bands such as the Revivalists (2006–2008), Moon Tower (2011–2013), and Johnnie and the Foodmasters (2015–2026), which brought together friends from his beloved Wakefield connections and the broader Boston music community. These collaborations were among his greatest sources of pride and joy.
Ben was especially dedicated to sharing music with others. As a music educator in Carver Public Schools and later Boston Public Schools, he taught hundreds of elementary school students, inspiring creativity, confidence, and a love for the arts. He also served as a Music Director, keyboardist, and inclusive instructor for performing arts programs, including children’s theater groups, adult musical theater, and the Cambridge Common Voices. His commitment to inclusion ensured that students with diverse learning challenges had access to meaningful artistic expression.
Among his many musical accomplishments, Ben performed challenging classical works and musical theater scores, while also teaching himself guitar. He participated in the D.I.Y. music scene and collaborative performances in both live venues and the recording studio.
Ben was known not only for his talent but for his kindness, inclusiveness, and generosity. He was a devoted friend who made others feel welcomed and valued, often bringing people together through music. His life was a testament to the power of community and the importance of supporting others in their creative pursuits.
This scholarship will support Wakefield students who are pursuing higher education and demonstrate both financial need and a commitment to the performing arts, particularly music and musical theater. Through this fund, Ben’s spirit will continue to inspire and uplift future generations of students.
Contributions to the Benjamin J. Tan Scholarship for the Performing Arts are encouraged to help the fund grow and provide increased awards.
