Mary Jo Brown Memorial Scholarship

The Mary Jo Brown Memorial Scholarship, established by the Mary Jo Brown Foundation, honors the life and legacy of Mary Jo Brown (1952–2012), a longtime resident of Greenwood. Mary Jo lived here with her beloved husband, Tom, and their daughter, Christina, and was deeply connected to both her family and her community. She was widely known for her extraordinary kindness, generosity, and warmth.

Mary Jo had a rare ability to make people feel truly seen, valued, and welcomed—whether they were close friends, family members, coworkers, or complete strangers. She gave freely of herself through compassion, quiet acts of service, and a genuine interest in others. Her warm smile and caring presence left a lasting impression, and these qualities remain some of the most cherished memories shared by those who knew her.

For 35 years, Mary Jo dedicated her professional life to healthcare, serving as Director of the Admitting Department at Tufts Medical Center. In this role, she supported patients and their families during some of their most vulnerable moments, leading with empathy, professionalism, and unwavering care. Her work had a profound and lasting impact—not only on the institution, but on the countless individuals whose lives she touched through her leadership and compassion.

Outside of her professional life, Mary Jo had a deep love for adventure and travel, especially trips to Hawaii and to Walt Disney World. She adored her family, her friends, children, and animals, and she found great joy in bringing people together. Mary Jo loved hosting gatherings – particularly her Fourth of July celebrations and Christmas festivities – creating spaces filled with laughter, connection, and warmth.

Mary Jo passed away in 2012 after a brave battle with cancer. In the spirit of honoring the way she lived her life and the values she held dear; her family and friends established this scholarship through the Mary Jo Brown Foundation. The scholarship serves as both a tribute to Mary Jo’s legacy and a thank you for the permanent mark she left on the hearts of those who loved her, ensuring that her compassion and generosity continue to inspire others.

The Mary Jo Brown Memorial Scholarship honors students who make the world brighter through kindness, compassion, and a genuine commitment to helping others—qualities that Mary Jo carried throughout her life. The scholarship:

• Recognizes young people who understand that even the smallest act of kindness can create a ripple effect—lifting spirits, strengthening communities, and inspiring others to do the same.

• Is designed for students who lead with heart. Academic achievement is valued, but the true focus is on character: a willingness to uplift others, volunteer time, and contribute meaningfully to school or community life.

• Encourages applicants who demonstrate a sustained dedication to volunteerism and community service, whether through service clubs, local organizations, charitable events, or self initiated efforts to meet a need they have observed.

• Celebrates students who take initiative, step up without being prompted, and inspire others to join in.

• Honors those who intentionally “spread smiles” by mentoring peers, supporting classmates who may feel isolated, creating inclusive environments, and showing empathy and positivity in everyday interactions.

This scholarship celebrates the belief that kindness is not just an action, but a way of life. Through this fund, Mary Jo’s legacy lives on—offering support, opportunity, and encouragement to students, and reminding all of us that the world becomes a better place when we choose to care for one another.
